It's In the Wood: Five Of Our Favorite Watches From Original Grain

It's In the Wood: Five Of Our Favorite Watches From Original Grain

When we first heard about Original Grain, it never occurred to us that you could make watches out of wood. Clearly, others liked the idea too as the company became Kickstarter’s third most funded campaign after launching in 2013.

The company has established themselves as pioneers in the wood and steel watching making business, and we wanted to learn more so we reached out to connect with founders Ryan and Andrew Beltran.

Since we’ve got a thing about the number five around here, we asked the guys to tell us about five of their favorite watches. Along the way, we got a chance to learn about the art of wood and steel.

So here’s a little bit about five of the coolest watches in the Original Grain collection. We encourage you to head over to the site to learn about all of the features of each watch.

The “Exotic” Verawood

The “Exotic” Verawood is part of the Original Classic line. It’s the first line for Original Grain and introduced the pioneering concept of wood & steel watches to the market. While wood is is just one element of the design, Original Grain wanted to highlight its versatility and beauty. The Classic Collection line features all sorts of exotic hardwoods from around the world including Verawood from Argentina.

With Verawood each watch is uniquely different, showing off its beautiful green wood accents. The wood is fun to work with, and no two watches look the same, making the “Exotic” Verawood watch truly an original.

The Whiskey/Espresso Barrel

The Whiskey/Espresso Barrel is part of the Barrel Collection. This line was inspired by Kentucky bourbon barrels and the desire to use sustainably sourced reclaimed wood. The Whiskey Barrel is also Original Grain’s flagship watch and one of their best sellers.

Limited Edition Jim Beam Black Kit

The Limited Edition Jim Beam Black Kit is the first collaboration between Jim Beam and Original Grain. Each watch is made with authentic Jim Beam barrels and individually numbered 1 through 500. Each watch also comes in a unique box set which includes a branded flask, premium Italian leather band, and tools.

The Ebony Matte/Black

The Ebony Matte/Black is part of the Minimalist line. Minimalist watches are simple and streamlined with just a touch of wood. Though it’s the simplest design in the Original Grain portfolio, they took a year to develop due to how thin the wooden bezel is (1.7mm).

The Alterra-44

The Alterra-44 line will be available November 2016. Soon to become Original Grain’s flagship watch, and will be its most expensive starting at $299. The watch will feature an epoxy inlay which is a process similar to making surfboards and will make the watch 10 atm water resistant.

Giving Back

trees-for-the-future

Last but not least, here’s another reason we like the guys from Original Grain. They are not only making their mark in the wood and steel watch business but making a difference with their support of Trees of the Future.

If you don’t know much about Trees of The Future, we’ll give you a quick primer, but we suggest you head over here and support the cause. In the 70s, Dave and Grace Deppner served as volunteers in the Phillippines where they witnessed human tragedy brought on by illegal logging. During that time they worked with communities to help revitalize lands by providing farmers with seeds, technical training on-site planning assistance. They continued to help after returning to the US, and in 1989 the charity Trees for the Future was created. Since then, they have planted over 115 million trees in dozens of countries.

Since Original Grain was born in the Pacific Northwest, and they have an obvious love for the outdoors, they soon partnered with Trees for the Future. The company plants ten trees for each watch sold, and since their launch, their goal is to plant 1 million trees in 2016.

Get a cool watch and help them hit a million here.
