Maybe he’s born with it.
Cosmetics powerhouse Maybelline has just appointed it’s first ever male ambassador, American Youtube sensation Manny Gutierrez.
Gutierrez announced his new role on Instagram, saying he was “honored” and “thrilled” by the appointment. He’s slated to take part in the brand’s That Boss Life campaign.
The makeup artist has over 2 million followers on Youtube and 3 million on Instagram. He’s part of a new wave of “beauty boys” that have taken the internet by storm.
For Gutierrez, his passion started early. “I wanted to play with eyeliner and makeup while other boys were playing with G.I. Joes,” he said. “So it was kind of tough for me because I didn’t really understand why I wanted to play with the ‘girl’ things rather than the ‘boy’ things.”
He’s not performing as or trying to be a woman, he’s simply exploring makeup as a man. “It’s an art form for me,” he told Marie Claire. “I’m still confident as a boy and I will always be a boy. I can be confident with bare skin and with a full face.”
Gutierrez isn’t the first male appointment by a major cosmetics brand. CoverGirl kicked off the movement in late 2016 when they brought on James Charles as a brand ambassador. At the time, Charles echoed Gutierrez’s sentiments:
“Men in makeup is becoming more widely accepted. But it’s going to take so much more open-mindedness to have it be a common thing.”
